Exhibition Outline

Realism that captures every wrinkle, dramatic chiaroscuro, and deftly expressed emotions in figure after figure: the art of Caravaggio (1571–1610) never ceases to fascinate.
To enhance the visitor experience and permit a deeper understanding of the painting, the venue will feature a large-screen video presentation and explanatory panels, while displays of various prints and other contemporary items will fill in the historical background.
The Deposition was born out of the Catholic Reformation, a major historical movement of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Change and renewal in the Church stimulated innovative forms of artistic expression, a prime example being the art of Caravaggio, leading to the Baroque style that came to maturity in succeeding decades.
The period of the painting’s creation was also one of vigorous Christian missionary outreach throughout the world including to Japan. Taking up this theme, and by virtue of a generous loan from the Vatican Apostolic Library, the exhibition will also present several original letters that early Japanese Catholic converts wrote to the pope of the day.
Hence the Caravaggio masterpiece will be examined afresh from broad perspectives both religious and historical.
