Overview

Higashiyama Kaii (1908-1999) is nationally renowned as a Nihon-ga (Japanese-style) painter representing the postwar era. This exhibition marks the first large-scale retrospective of Higashiyama’s career in Tokyo in a decade. Born in Yokohama and a graduate of the Tokyo Fine Arts School, Higashiyama studied in Germany before enduring a period of great hardship, including being drafted in the Pacific War. After the war, he pioneered a unique style of landscape painting, and showed a multitude of highly lyrical masterpieces, primarily in the Nitten exhibition. Boasting a large collection of important Higashiyama works, the exhibition also includes a special showing of the monumental Toshodaiji Miei-do Murals.

  • Visitors who are under junior high school students will be admitted for free.
  • Disabled persons (along with the one assistant) will be admitted for free upon presenting the Disabled Person’s Booklet or an equivalent form of government issued ID.
  • Free entrance to the exhibition for high school students from November 23 (Fri.) to November 25 (Sun.), 2018, upon presenting student ID.
  • Advance tickets on sale from September 4 (Tue.) - October 23 (Tue.), 2018 (sold at the National Art Center, Tokyo only until October 22 (Mon.), 2018).
  • Tickets, both Advance and General, are available through the National Art Center, Tokyo (open days only), the exhibition website (ONLINE TICKETS), and other major ticket agencies. Service charges may apply. (These services are only available in Japanese.)
  • Group tickets (for groups of a minimum of 20 people) can only be purchased at the National Art Center, Tokyo.
  • Reduction (100 yen off) applies to visitors who present the ticket stub of a concurrent exhibition at The National Art Center, Tokyo; Suntory Museum of Art; or Mori Art Museum (Art Triangle Roppongi).
  • Students, faculty and staff, of “Campus Members”, can apply for group discounts.
  • Credit card (UC, Master Card, VISA, JCB, AMEX, Diners Club, DISCOVER), e-cash (Suica, PASMO, ICOCA, etc.), iD, J-Debit and Union Pay are available for purchasing tickets.
