Overview

Contemporary art from the emerging economic powerhouse of Southeast Asia, with its total population of around 600 million, is currently earning widespread international attention. In 2017, 50 years after the formation of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations*), the National Art Center, Tokyo; Mori Art Museum, and the Japan Foundation Asia Center will stage “SUNSHOWER: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia 1980s to Now,” the largest-ever exhibition of Southeast Asian contemporary art to be held in Japan.
The “sunshower” - rain falling from clear skies - is an intriguing meteorological phenomenon, and a frequent occurrence in the tropical climes of Southeast Asia. Sunshowers also serve as a poetic metaphor for the vicissitudes of a region that in the latter half of the 20th century, in the wake of the colonial era, experienced enormous political, social and economic upheaval: Cold War conflicts and dictatorships followed by modernization and the spread of democracy, and in more recent years, remarkable economic advancement, investment, and urban development. Out-of-the-blue rainfall is also a metaphor for the ambiguous nature of these ups and downs.
Multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-faith Southeast Asia has nurtured a truly dynamic and diverse culture.This exhibition will explore contemporary art in Southeast Asia from the 1980s onward from various perspectives, including aspirations for freedom, identity, growth and its dark sides, community, faith and tradition, and the revisiting of history; showcasing that dynamism and diversity while comparing and contrasting Southeast Asian contemporary art with international contemporary art trends.

Symposium "How Has Contemporary Art Represented Southeast Asia?"

The exhibition "SUNSHOWER: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia 1980s to Now" intends to examine the development of contemporary art in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region since the end of the 1980s, alongside key words emblematic in generational and regional terms.
The political, economic and social developments may vary by country, but what all these nations have in common is enormous change that began with post-World War II decolonization as they modernize and democratize, and in more recent years experiencing accelerated economic progress, investment, and urban development.
In this program, as well as reassessing the world through the lens of Southeast Asian contemporary art, primarily by posing the question "How has contemporary art represented Southeast Asia?," scholars, curators and artists of Southeast Asian contemporary art will discuss the works of the artists from a myriad of backgrounds showcased in the exhibition and how they have confronted different events in society as they pursue their practices.

A Working Title: Screenings programmed by emerging Asian film curators

"A Working Title" is the Japan Foundation Asia Center’s new program meant for developing skills of the young and emerging curators in Southeast Asia and Japan as well as fostering networks among them. The films selected by the participants introduce fresh perspectives on the themes of SUNSHOWER. There will be Q&A sessions with directors Jon Lazam (the Philippines, September 3) and Aizawa Toranosuke (Japan, September 10).

Verbal Imaging Museum Tour with Visually Impaired People

A workshop for people from various backgrounds and disabilities to join others and discuss their impressions and thoughts about the "SUNSHOWER" exhibition. Teams of about seven people will come together for about 2 hours to talk freely about the exhibition exploring the concept of "What you see" and "What you can not see." The program is accessible to all, with or without disabilities.

SUNSHOWER Student Workshop

The "SUNSHOWER" exhibition showcases a wonderful selection of contemporary art from the 10 ASEAN countries. This exhibition provides an unparalleled opportunity to discuss the trends of contemporary art in Southeast Asia. At the National Art Center, a student from Southeast Asia studying in Japan and a Japanese college student will review the "SUNSHOWER" exhibition and hold a workshop talking about the contemporary art scene in Southeast Asia from their different vantage points.
