This program features a screening of two Nikkatsu films for which Hanae Mori designed the costumes, Crazed Fruit (1956) and Streetlights (1957), both directed by Ko Nakahira, alongside a lecture by film costume specialist Chihiro Tatsumi, Specially Appointed Lecturer at Setsunan University.
Crazed Fruit gave Yujiro Ishihara his first leading role and remains a defining youth film of the Japanese postwar generation. Streetlights, starring Yoko Minamida and Yumeji Tsukioka, is a romantic comedy about two women running a dressmaking shop. Between the screenings, Tatsumi, author of Hanae Mori and Film Costume: Innovation and Trajectory in Japanese Cinema (Shinwasha, 2026), will discuss the costumes’ role in the films.
