Advance Appointment Service

Prior reservation is required to see the materials that require the utmost care in handling from the viewpoint of material preservation, and microfilms and microfiches (marked with "[Reservation]xxx" in the Location column in the search results of the National Art Center, Tokyo Online Catalog (OPAC)).

* These materials are not accessed in the Art Library (Main Building 3F), but in the Annex. Information on how to enter the Annex will be provided when your reservation is confirmed.


How to make a reservation

  1. Use the OPAC to search for your desired materials.
  2. For materials marked with "[Reservation]xxx " in the Location column in the OPAC search results, click on the material location. Then you will come to this page. Please go to Step 3.
  3. This will open the "Advance Appointment Service" page.
  4. Please be sure to read the Appointment terms and guidelines below and click the “I agree to the above terms” button to accept the terms.
  5. This will open the “Application for Advance Appointment Materials” page. Here you can download the application form and fill in the appropriate information. We will begin processing your appointment after you submit the form via email (The email address is shown on the application form).
  6. Please come to the Annex building directly on the day of your visit. We will inform you how to enter the Annex when the reservation is confirmed.   

Service hours

Wednesdays and Thursdays (except national and museum holidays)

*The Art Library Annex may be temporarily closed due to maintenance or extremely bad weather conditions such as typhoons.
*Please make a reservation at least 10 days prior to your preferred date of access.
  e.g., If you wish to make a reservation on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, the application deadline is Thursday, June 12.

Materials which are marked with "[Reservation]xxx" in the Location column in the search results of the National Art Center, Tokyo Online Catalog (OPAC)

The following databases:

*Please note that some materials may be unavailable due to administrative reasons such as conservation of the materials.
*If the materials you requested have already been digitized, you may view the digitized materials on the dedicated PC instead of the originals.

Number of pieces of material that may be requested per reservation

Books and exhibition catalogs:
5 in total
up to 5 titles/15 issues in total

*No additions or changes of materials can be made on the day of your visit.


Materials may be photocopied within the limit of copyright law.

  • *No change given for bills. If you need to change 10,000- or 5,000-yen bills, please go to the central information counter on the first floor of the Main Building in advance.
  • *Please note that there are cases where requested materials cannot be photocopied due to administrative reasons of the Center, such as their preservation.
  • *Please do not use cell phones or cameras. Taking photographs (e.g. of the materials and anywhere inside) in the library is prohibited.

Appointment terms and guidelines

  • Please make a reservation via email at least 10 days before your preferred date.
  • Please include 3 preferred appointment dates.
  • Your name, email address, and telephone number are required in order to contact you within 3 days (excluding Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, and advance appointment service suspension periods) after accepting your application.
  • The library staff will use the email address or telephone number only to contact you regarding your appointment, and in cases where the requested materials are unavailable due to their deteriorating condition or if the NACT is temporarily closing due to unavoidable circumstances, such as typhoons.
  • If you need to cancel your reservation, please write to the email address that contacted you to confirm your application.
  • Your reservation will be cancelled if you are more than 1 hour late.
