文艺复兴时期，人们效仿刻有罗马皇帝侧面像的古代钱币，开始制作君主与贵族的肖像纪念章。意大利北部的曼图亚，于15世纪中期成为纪念章艺术的中心，当地统治者贡扎加家族的成员们热衷于委托制作刻有自己侧面肖像的纪念章。这枚纪念章所刻画的切奇莉亚・贡扎加，是曼图亚侯爵詹弗朗切斯科一世・贡扎加之女。背面刻画的是一位女子正在抚摸象征贞洁的独角兽。
