在古代，骑马像是彰显最高权力者荣耀的肖像形式。其典型范例，便是古罗马马可・奥勒留皇帝的巨大青铜骑马像（173–176年，罗马，卡比托利欧博物馆）。文艺复兴以后，欧洲的君主们皆以这尊高度超过4米的骑马像为范本，采用绘画、青铜像、大理石浮雕、纪念章等各式各样的材料和技法，命人制作了自己的肖像。据推测，这件浮雕以16世纪后半期法国最重要的雕塑家日耳曼・皮隆所制原型为基础，由他的工房制作而成。根据骑手的相貌特征，推测所表现的是瓦卢瓦王朝法国国王查理九世（在位1560–1574年）。
