Work Beyond Manga

CLAMP's artistic endeavors go beyond the boundaries of manga. They engage in a wide spectrum of artistic pursuits, including picture books, essays, book cover and illustration design, animation character design, and costume design. This exhibition showcases some of these works.

They have provided illustrations for numerous novels, but the most representative examples are the illustrations that they created for Soryuden: Super Dragon Brothers (1987 – 2020), a series of fantasy novels by Yoshiki Tanaka. They designed the covers and provided illustrations for the Kodansha Bunko edition of the series that was published starting from 1993, giving a new look to the four brothers, the protagonists of the story.

CLAMP has also been active in all aspects of the field of animation. In addition to character design, they wrote the script for a TV animation adaptation of Magic Knight Rayearth. In the case of Cardcaptor Sakura TV animation, they not only wrote the script but also designed all the costumes featured in the series, including the original, anime-only episodes. Aside from the animation adaptation of their works, they designed characters for CODE GEASS: Lelouch of the Rebellion, which became a massive hit. They also designed the characters for The Grimm Variations, an original animation series that is currently streaming on Netflix.

CLAMP continue to expand their scope of activities, with the recent examples being a picture book titled GIFT, which was published in collaboration with Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu, and a costume design in collaboration with Hello Kitty to celebrate her 50th anniversary.
