Greeting

This international travelling exhibition is a reworking of ★Picasso Celebration: The Collection In a New Light!★, which was held at the Musée national Picasso-Paris in 2023 to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso (1881–1973). The exhibition space’s imaginative design is the brainchild of British fashion designer Sir Paul Smith (b. 1946), who drew his inspiration from Picasso’s creations.
As a leading artist of the 20th century who had an immeasurable impact on the world of art, Picasso has become a name instantly recognized in not only his adopted homeland of France, but also here in Japan and across the globe. Paul Smith is one of Britain’s foremost designers and is renowned for his use of playful colours and fusion of traditional craftsmanship with modern sensibilities. Like Picasso, he is a creator who has continued to exert a tremendous influence on Japan. With the opening of the country’s first Paul Smith shop in Tokyo in 1984, the public became awestruck with his designs featuring vibrant colours and stripes that adorned clothing and accessories—and that create an allure that still captivates people’s hearts today.
This exhibition offers the opportunity to experience a rare collaboration that transcends the boundaries between art and design by bringing together the extraordinary and timeless creativity of Pablo Picasso and Paul Smith. We extend our deepest appreciation to the Musée national Picasso-Paris and the art museums in Japan that made this possible by generously lending their invaluable collections and immense assistance. Our heartfelt gratitude also goes to all those who provided their sponsorship and other support to this exhibition.
