44 Little girl wearing a ribbed hat and a ruff
Children in early Renaissance portraiture were usually depicted alongside members of their family. However, as time passed, portraits of children on their own began to appear occasionally. Unfortunately, the sitter for this bust of a young girl created in France in the late sixteenth century is unknown, but the use of durable marble suggests that it was commissioned after the girl’s death to preserve her memory.
