26 Statuette: Angerona
Many archaeological excavations were undertaken in Italy during the Renaissance, uncovering a large number of small bronze statuettes that had been used as handles or supports for mirrors in ancient Greece. These statuettes were extremely popular among collectors, and in sixteenth-century Italy, many forgeries were produced to capitalize on this demand. This piece is a typical example of this practice.
