The fifteenth-century invention of the coiled spring sparked further advances in mechanical miniaturization, which subsequently led to the development of portable pocket watches. France and Germany (particularly Nuremberg and Augsburg) became centers of the watchmaking industry and produced many magnificent pocket watches boasting precise internal mechanisms and exquisitely engraved exteriors.
