20 The Virgin adoring the Child

In the 1430s, Florentine sculptor Luca della Robbia achieved success with his production of glossy, vividly colored sculptures created by applying polychrome glazes to terracotta. His glazed terracotta sculptures, which were both beautiful and less expensive than works in marble or bronze, rapidly grew in popularity. The Della Robbia family workshop inherited his techniques, producing numerous other works. This relief was created by Luca's nephew, Andrea, and his workshop.
