8 View of Rome, with a seated figure drawing
Giovanni Battista Naldini was a painter based in Florence. He lived in Rome from the autumn of 1560 to the spring of 1561, honing his skills by drawing classical sculptures and landscapes filled with ancient ruins. Approximately sixty of those drawings are now held in several museums and private collections around the world, but when Naldini drew them, they were all part of a single sketchbook. This is one of those drawings, and it depicts an artist sketching outdoors in front of ancient ruins. The structures in the background are labeled with letters of the alphabet, and the key at the bottom provides the corresponding names: A for the Palatine Hill, B for the Colosseum, etc.
