“Onogoro Stone III” by Mariko Mori
The third chapter of Bvlgari Kaleidos is introduced by Onogoro Stone III, a newly commissioned sculpture that draws its inspiration from the Kojiki, Japan’s oldest mythological text, which recounts the divine creation of Onogoro Island by the deities Izanagi and Izanami. According to the myth, the island emerged from droplets cast into the sea by a sacred, jewel-encrusted spear—a site that would become the setting of the first ritual union and the symbolic origin of life.
In evoking this ancient narrative, Mori continues her exploration of the intersections between cosmology, spirituality, and advanced technology. Characteristic of her practice, Onogoro Stone III merges contemporary materials with archetypal symbolism, creating a meditative space that invites viewers to reflect on origins – both personal and universal. This work exemplifies Mori’s enduring interest in bridging past and future, myth and science, through minimalist forms imbued with spiritual resonance.
