Bvlgari Kaleidos: A journey into Colors, Cultures and Crafts
The National Art Center, Tokyo and Bvlgari are pleased to present the exhibition Bvlgari Kaleidos: Colors, Cultures and Crafts.
Since its founding in 1884, Bvlgari, the world-renowned Roman high jeweler, has created innovative pieces that boldly combine a wide array of colored gems, earning it the title “Master of Colored Gemstones.” This exploration of the Maison’s unparalleled artistry and mastery of color is Bvlgari’s first exhibition in Japan in ten years, and its largest ever in the country.
The Kaleidos in the exhibition title is derived from the Greek words kalos (beautiful) and eidos (form). Around 350 precious jewelry pieces from the Bvlgari Heritage Collection and private collections invite visitors on a voyage through color, as if venturing into the interior of a kaleidoscope. The exhibition also features installations by three contemporary female artists—Lara Favaretto, Mariko Mori, and Akiko Nakayama—that illuminate a passion for color found in both jewelry and art, and shared by Japan and Italy. Additionally, scenography designed in collaboration with the Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA and the Italian design studio Formafantasma enriches this immersive exploration of Bvlgari’s extraordinary creativity.
In closing, we extend our deepest gratitude to the Embassy of Italy in Tokyo for its generous support, and offer our most heartfelt thanks to all those who contributed in various ways to make this exhibition a reality.
