ANGELIC LAYER

Serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's Monthly Shonen Ace (1999–2001)

ANGELIC LAYER
was CLAMP's first work to be serialized in a boys' magazine. The story centers around Misaki Suzuhara, who discovers a fighting game called ANGELIC LAYER. Players, known as "Deus," control small dolls called "Angels" in battles. The straightforward and energetic heroine archetype resonates with works published in the girls' manga magazine Nakayosi. However, Misaki's journey of overcoming her insecurities through hard work, facing off against rivals, and growing through their challenges embodies the quintessential elements of a classic boys' manga storyline. The art style features thicker lines and fewer details, creating a relaxed and free-spirited impression. The setting is connected to the one in Chobits. It was adapted into a TV anime in 2001.
